Students taking individual keyboard lessons at School of Rock NYC can customize their course of study and achieve their keyboard proficiency goals by designing lessons that focus on a variety of skills and techniques including learning basic chords, scales, song development and improvisation. Our instructors are professional, working musicians who can offer a broad education in a variety of styles ranging from blues to rock to pop and jazz.
Inspired Approach to Keyboard Lessons
We believe the best way to learn music is to play music. Our approach to private keyboard lessons focuses on getting students playing real songs so practicing is more than a bunch of drills. Our keyboard instructors will teach you everything from basic scales to epic synth arrangements by Pink Floyd, Rush, The Eurythmics and more. Using rock and blues music as a fun foundation to broaden musical concepts, students are able to apply their knowledge and learn how to integrate into an overall band sound.
We offer 30 or 45 minute lesson durations for a one-time fee as well as ongoing weekly lessons scheduled at the same time with the same teacher (School of Rock will provide a substitute when a student's regular teacher is away due to touring, gigs, vacation or illness). Weekly lessons scheduling as ongoing require an enrollment plan that is billed monthly. Ongoing lessons can also be combined with a rehearsal program.
Playing Keyboards With a Band
Students that are interested in applying the skills learned in keyboard lessons as part of a band, should check out our Rock 101 Program or the Performance Program. Adults can look into our Grad School Program. The Rock 101 Program is appropriate for beginner Keyboardists around ages 8-10 while the Performance Program is appropriate for intermediate and advanced keyboardists between the ages of 8 and 18. Grad school is appropriate for anyone over the age of 18 whether you are an experienced musician looking to get back on stage or just learning for the first time. All programs combine weekly private keyboard lessons with a weekly rehearsal, giving students the opportunity to perform with a band and learn how to work with the band for an integrated sound. Such programs give the student the added benefit of being able to apply their keyboard skills and knowledge by playing in a band with their peers!
Rookies Program
For young students around 6 or 7 years old interested in learning music, but unsure about where to begin, our Rookies Program may be the right fit. This class teaches the basics of music and allows students to try out various instruments.
Rock 101 Program for keyboardists
School of Rock is a journey, not a destination! That journey begins in our Rock 101 program, where students get the full benefits of our unique performance-based instruction.
The Performance Program is designed for kids who know the basics of how to play their instrument and are ready to take it to the stage. This program introduces the team element into music instruction. Students will learn harmonies, musicianship and how to perform in an authentic rock show environment.
For adult students over the age of 18 School of Rock offers, our Grad School Program. Program options such as performing live, writing and recording your originals, etc. will ultimately depend on the students' interest.

Rock 101 Program for keyboardists
School of Rock is a journey, not a destination! That journey begins in our Rock 101 program, where students get the full benefits of our unique performance-based instruction.
- The Rock 101 program includes a weekly 30 or 45-minute individual keyboard lesson with one of our professional musician instructors and a weekly 90-minute group rehearsal. Our Rock 101 directors specialize in working with younger students and typically play along with the kids.
- Beginner keyboard students start off by learning the names of each note on the keyboard. Then they learn how to blend those notes into the basic chords they will use in their Rock 101 songs.
- Our keyboard instructors use THE SONG AS A LESSON, introducing the student to concepts like chord progressions, time signatures, and scales for the first time.
- Students learn the various tones and sounds required for a particular song. They may use a piano sound to play a song by Neil Young, an organ sound for Santana or an electric piano sound for Stevie Wonder.
- Once our piano students have mastered the basic aspects of a song, our instructors will begin working on the more advanced concepts that will help them with cool licks and soloing techniques.
After a few weeks in Rock 101, most students are ready for the challenge of our performance program and are encouraged to take part in a show!
